Welcome to the extended edition of the Detroit Lakes Fishing Report! Here you will find a few extra tips and tricks, compared to the other weekly editions of the report. Enjoy!
Whether you’re fishing for crappies, walleye or bass, it’s a great time of year to catch them all! Over the past week, we’ve caught walleye just outside weedlines in 12’-15’, and 18’-22’. You can look for them at the tip of deep bars extending from shore, and midlake humps. They are biting on spinners or drop shot tipped with a leech, or a jig and minnow combo. A bobber set up tipped with a leech or minnow is also effective on calm days. While crappies can be found deeper, we don’t even bother fishing there because we’re nailing them in the weeds in 8’-14’, over mid-lake structure. Depending on the lake, you may find some big green sunfish in the mix, too. All you need to catch them is a jig and a small plastic. You will find largemouth bass at that same depth as panfish, in addition to finding them near shoreline structure. They are biting on classic bass lures but also on a simple jig tipped with a sucker minnow. Smallmouth bass are creeping deeper and deeper, but you will still find them in shallow flats with sand and rocks. Plastics and leeches have produced the most smallies. Thanks for reading and good luck fishing!
