Detroit Lakes Fishing and Ice Report (1/6/25)

Happy New Year, anglers! 2026 has been a mixed bag so far—I saw big walleyes caught this weekend, but I was also snubbed by more crappies than I’d care to admit. 😢

Walleyes are still biting after sunset, with the best window between 7–9 pm.  They are roaming weedlines in 10’–15’ on Little Detroit, though others report catching ‘eyes as deep as 22’ on nearby lakes.  A big fathead or small sucker on a deadstick is tough to beat.

The bluegill bite has been phenomenal during daylight hours, and when it temporarily shuts down, drop a larger spoon or Slab Rap to catch the pike spooking the ’gills.  Crappies have been finicky, feeding in short 20–30 minute bursts after sunset—on good days you’ll catch them before and after that window, but on slow days they’ll just tease you.  Before you give up, try downsizing to a small jig and waxies.

There is 12”-16” of ice on most lakes. Little DL has 16" and the only open access is by J & K Marina and Lakeside. It has veered to the right, but it is in great shape. Wherever you go, good luck and stay safe!
