Detroit Lakes Fishing Report: Extended Edition (6/9/26)

His first walleye. He wants to go fishing every day now!
His first walleye. He wants to go fishing every day now!

For readers on the Detroit Lakes fishing report, this is the extended version of the fishing report with extra details and tips not included in any other version of the report found online. Thanks for reading!

The walleye bite has been more consistent over the past week, with a few nicer fish showing up in the mix. Nightcrawlers have produced the most fish, especially when worked slowly. Bigger walleyes are roaming shallow weeds, while smaller eaters are holding deeper, up to 18' on most lakes. You may be used to using a 1/4 or 1/3 crawler but they want the whole thing right now, so grab an extra box of crawlers on your way to the lake.

The largemouth bass and bluegill bite is also very strong right now in and around shallow structure. Docks, weeds, and shoreline cover have all been worth checking. Natural-colored smaller plastics have worked very well, especially with a slower, more subtle presentation.  We caught 'gills, crappies, largemouth and smallmouth bass, all on the same white 1/16 oz Fireball Jig tipped with a 1.5" black and white plastic minnow with red flakes. I pulled the plastics from my crappie stash, but the bass we caught were huge!

The pike bite remains strong and has been the most consistent bite this season. You will find smaller males in 9'-12' of water throughout the day, and they will bite on almost anything they see. Larger females can be found deeper in the water column, especially near nearby breaks and deeper weed edges.  Good luck out there!
