Detroit Lakes Fishing Report (5/22/25)

The past week can be summed up with the most useful Scandinavian word we all know. Oofta! While the cold weather and punishing winds have put many fishermen on the sidelines recently, others have excelled! First, I’d like to congratulate a few hometown anglers for their performance at the KRCQ Reel Country Classic Fishing Tournament on Ottertail Lake this past weekend. Scott Mackner and Mike Witt placed 5th last Friday and 3rd place on Saturday. Nice work, fellas!

So, what presentation is hot right now? Scott and Mike used jigs and rigs tipped with minnows to catch their bag of walleye. Switching out minnows for plastics this time of year may result in less fish in the boat, but it will likely increase your odds of catching larger fish. Others have had luck catching 'eyes with a bobber and a leech. Right now walleyes are spread out, from 6’-20’+, so stay on the move until you mark them. Bass and panfish can still be found in less than 5’ near weed growth, and they are hungry. Texas rigs, chatterbaits, swimbaits, topwater lures, and lipless (countdown) crankbaits are all good choices for smallmouth and largemouth, but the options are almost endless right now. Choose a presentation that you're comfortable with, and one that keeps the weeds off your line, and you'll boat some bass!
Finally, go a little deeper for aggressive pike right now. 8'-12' seems to be the sweet spot, but that varies from lake to lake.
Thanks for reading this week's report. Go get ‘em!
