Detroit Lakes Fishing Report (5/30/26)

Thanks for reading this week’s Detroit Lakes fishing report! Here’s the scoop.
Walleye fishing has been slow. Water temps have been anywhere from 53–58 degrees on the lakes I’ve fished so far, and I think the bite should pick up soon once those temps rise a bit more. I was comparing notes with Scott Mackner this week, and we both agreed that the fish are there — the challenge has been getting them to commit.
You can still coax the ’eyes into biting right now. He has been finding them on Otter Tail in 9'–12', and we’ve both seen a similar pattern closer to home. For conditions like this, the best solution is tried and true — bring a slip bobber rod and don’t forget the leeches!
You’ll also find aggressive pike and bass in the same depths as the walleye right now. Shiner and sucker minnows, along with plastics, have all produced big fish. I prefer 1/16 oz jigs in 9'–12' to keep me out of the weeds, but when the wind blows, bumping up to 1/8 oz helps maintain control.
Use short shank jigs for live bait and longer shanks for plastics. The one exception is during shiner season — happening right now — when I use long shank jigs to hook shiners through the eye socket and down into the body. This creates a weedless presentation that’s extremely effective in shallow weeds this time of year.
As always, when fishing a jig, keep your line tight and your grip loose — then tighten up and drive the hook home after you feel that tap or two.
