Ice fishing has officially begun in the Detroit Lakes area, and local anglers couldn’t be more excited! There is 6"-7" of ice on many lakes, including Detroit, Sallie, Munson, & Leaf, to name a few. Crappie & walleye are active starting around 5 pm. Look for green weeds with your camera and fish the outside edge of that weedline. I suggest also putting a tip up shallower, in those green weeds & keep the minnow above them. Witt's Quality Bait has some nice rainbow chubs and wax worms right now, so grab them before you go out!
Disclaimer: Ice is never 100% safe, and every lake is different. It’s up to you to use your best judgement to stay safe. Here are a few tips-carry a chisel and retractable ice picks with you at all times. Tap the ice ahead of you with the chisel as you walk, and keep your ice picks secure around your neck. Also, drill a hole every 50 feet to assure the ice is consistently 4” or more. Finally, always tell someone where you are going, if fishing alone.
