Detroit Lakes Fishing Report: Extended Edition (9/22/26)

Fishing has picked up over the past few days, and crappies and sunfish have been the most consistent bite.

We've been finding crappies in about 15 feet, well outside the shallow weed lines where the weeds start to thin out. If you're sitting on thick weeds, move out until they get patchy. There are plenty of pike at that depth too, so you'll likely tangle with a few while you're crappie fishing, and if pike are what you're after, that's your starting spot.

Sunfish are in a couple of different spots. Some are sitting near deep weedlines on the bottom, and we're also finding large schools of them suspended out over deep water.

Big bass are holding deeper, in 18 to 22 feet.

Walleyes are biting best when the sun is out of the picture, so early mornings, evenings, and cloudy days have been the best times to be out. Crawlers and minnows under a slip bobber are catching fish, and the slip bobber lets you set your bait at the exact depth you want and keep it there.
