Detroit Lakes Fishing Report: Extended Edition (5/26/26)

For readers on the Detroit Lakes fishing report, this is the extended version of the fishing report with extra details and tips not included in any other version of the report found online. Thanks for reading!

The bite is on fire right now! 🔥 Walleye, pike, bass, and crappie were jumping in the boat over Memorial day weekend. The consistent weather in the forecast is a good sign that walleye fishing will continue to be above average this week. The high atmospheric temperature is going to heat up the surface water on area lakes very quickly and we will blow past the “best” water temperature range. The good news is, that’s only surface water temps, and the walleye bite doesn’t follow just one variable, so don’t think twice–get out on the water! Bass are in the shallow weeds and pike are on the edge of the weedlines in 10’-12’ right now. ‘Eyes have been roaming in 10’-17’, which overlaps with pike a bit. Regardless of species, a live minnow on a jig is a sure thing. A leech on a slip bobber is a good option if you need to place your bait precisely between weeds patches.

⭐️ One important detail for walleye anglers: the jig bite is extremely light right now. To begin, your line must be tight at all times, or you will leave the lake disappointed. Truly, this type of bite is what separates the casual angler from the serious angler. It is the best time to make that transition, if that's where you are at right now. Any focus diverted from keeping the line tight is a missed opportunity, and you only get a few each day. Carpe diem, my friends!

🎣 Use light line and a light rod and reel so you can actually detect the bite. Do not set the hook right away. Instead, loosen your grip on the pole and even “give the fish” a foot or two by moving your rod tip toward it. Count to five if you have to—anything to delay the hookset by a few seconds. This will put more fish in your boat right now, and any time the bite is light.

There has been no more appropriate time to say this: tight lines, everyone!! 😃

Want to learn how to make that transition from a casual to a serious angler? You're in luck...
