Fish are moving deeper in area lakes, and the smallmouth bite is off the charts right now! We’ve been catching walleyes, smallmouth and largemouth bass, and bluegills in 22-25’ in our boat. The hot bait right now is, without a doubt, leeches. Troll them on bottom behind a spinner or attached to a live bait (Lindy) rig, or pitch them out on a dropshot or jig and you are bound to catch walleye. The smallmouth bass bite has been so incredible, I would make a point to head to your favorite smallie lake and ride the lighting! The smallies on Pelican will bend your pole in half (no joke), but Big Cormorant and Lida offer excellent numbers as well as some size in deeper water. These are just a few options in the area, but you can find bronzebacks in many lakes. You’ll catch them using a dropshot with a plastic or a leech, or a tube. Live bait rigs with a leech work too. Enjoy the cooler weather and good luck fishing, everyone!
