Detroit Lakes Fishing Report: Special Expanded Edition (5/6/25)

Anglers have a lot to smile about right now!  Currently, the forecast predicts a high of 77° for the fishing opener on Saturday–the warmest May 10th since 2011!  I am even more excited to see warm, consistent temperatures on the days leading up to the opener.  Fish are more active when the weather is stable.

Let’s talk strategy!  Target bass and crappie in shallow bays that offer the warmest water.  Casting plastics near emerging vegetation is a great strategy–lily pads and bulrushes (pin reeds) are my favorite.  My favorite bass lure this time of year is a weightless Texas rig presentation with a white 5" plastic minnow on 5/0 hook. I like to search weedy bottoms for beds that stick out--they are circular in shape and lighter in color because the gravel is exposed.

Walleye should be shallow too, but it’s never a guarantee, and each lake is different. Be prepared to move as you search. The beauty of the clear water lakes in the area is you can often spot walleye from a distance. The white spot of their tail give them away, so look for it!  Target shallow transitions from hard sand & gravel to mud & weeds. In other words, target any visible or submerged weed lines. Running water may also hold walleye and other species.  Historically, the most effective walleye presentation is a simple jig, tipped with a minnow. That said, plastics between 2.5" and 4" are very effective this time of year. In fact, it is the best time of year to fish for walleye with plastics. Don't be afraid to alternate between live and plastic baits until you find some action!

Finally, any of Rapala’s shallow running Husky Jerk or Ripstop baits are a great option and they will attract the most aggressive fish. Don't be afraid to pause for up to 30 seconds between jerks.

Good luck to all of you, and remember to enjoy your surroundings. It really is a slice of paradise!
