Detroit Lakes Fishing Report (4/7/26)

While I don’t recommend venturing out on the ice, locally, cold temperatures are doing little to speed up the ice out process! Detroit Lakes’ anglers are truly in limbo. Die-hards have open water options, though. It’s a great time of year to pitch jigs toward shore for ‘eyes on Lake Traverse, and that bite will continue through the month. There are plenty of accesses open on Rainy River, too. Birchdale has been open for a couple weeks, and Frontier opened up last week. While there is still shore ice in many places, anglers can still have one week from today to get in on the early catch and release season. For reference, gage height water levels are a little less than a foot lower than last year, right now (3.8’ as of April 6th), according to the USGS website. See the image above for historic data since 2024. For the rest of you–enjoy the offseason and keep prepping for open water!
