The pre-spawn crappie bite is heating up fast and it is safe to say the fun has officially begun! You’ll find them where the water is warmest on any lake. I have been targeting them in shallow bays (from 2’-8’) where the water temps have surpassed 50°. While live bait has been the ticket so far, plastics also excel this time of year so be prepared to try both. Regardless of bait, you’ll have the most luck putting it beneath a small float. In fact, you’ll find a slip bobber on nearly every rod in my boat right now. When something works, lean into it! Due to very low water levels, be sure to use caution as you enter into shallow water. Some bays that I normally fish this time of year have even become inaccessible by boat. Keep your eyes peeled, keep that motor trimmed and keep your trolling motor nice and high to avoid damage to your equipment. If you are lucky enough to get out this week, bring your rain gear. Good luck!
